2008 Oil Paintings Gallery

I spent most of 2008 painting, working with Jef Gunn of the Pacific Northwest College of Art, as well as with fellow artists at a variety of critique groups. Except for one group invitational, all of my exhibits were of the oils. Thus, it seems fitting that a separate gallery should contain that work. The oil paintings fall into various groupings: scenes from Basin, Montana, where I spent December and January, 2007-'08;landscapes, mostly of eastern Oregon; scenes from small eastern Oregon towns, where I painted in July of 2008; and scenes from around Portland, mostly in my southeast neighborhood. In addition, I did a number of paintings on the Springwater Corridor bike and pedestrian trail, particularly near the new overpass where I became fascinated with McLoughlin Avenue as it bypassed Sellwood. With the exception of the abstracts, all my paintings are begun on-site, with a two-or-three hour plein air session. Most are finished in the studio, using as aids reference photographs that I take during the painting session at the site. I am only interested in painting that which I have experienced. I don't paint "the beautiful" nor even "the sublime." I try to capture a specific time and place through my own particular set of quirky sensibilities. Most of the paintings have anecdotes attached to them, and these resonate, I hope, within the paintings themselves.
